'If I think about Eisenstein, Dreyer, Ford, Hitchcock, Lean, Kurosawa, early Lang, etc., only Matisse and Picasso and a few other modern painters keep me up all night. Nietzsche said that all life is argument over matters of taste. Bicycle Thieves or Casablanca interest me far more than Warhol or Judd. Curtiz and Huston excite me more than Miro or Leger do. W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers interest me far more than Beuys or Stella. On the other hand, Duchamp mesmerizes me and digital Sci-Fi movies bore me. Any crime thriller grabs me far more than today’s Salon art of videos and cables and junk all over the floor. I’d much rather watch Grace Kelly than Mathew Barney any day. Garbo is more important in my life than Pollock. That doesn’t mean that Pollock isn’t “good”, Of course he is. I just prefer to watch Anna Christie or Grand Hotel. It all comes down to what one wants to do with one’s absurd life.'
