The Orchard - a Remembrance of Georges Perec

'The Orchard' is a record of the friendship of American Harry Mathews and Frenchman Georges Perec, both writers.

Perec died in 1982 at the age of 46, well-known in France for his novels and his weekly crossword puzzles in 'Le Point'.

Mathews adopts American writer Joe Brainard's 'I remember' structure to write about Perec and to express his dismay at the loss of a dear friend. 'Each 'I remember',' he says is 'like pebbles cast ashore by a rough sea'.

In a foreword, Mathews explains the background to the format that he follows here, originally published in French in 1986.
