Twenty volumes: A complete set of the annual adventures of these enduring and popular heroes, barometers of Australian masculinity, from the world of Australian comics.
Bluey, a World War One veteran, and Curley, a young exuberant recruit, meet in 1941 and see action fighting the Germans in the Middle East, the Japanese in New Guinea, on to London for the victory march, to Japan as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces, while continuing their own war against any authority figure, regardless of their rank, nationality, ideology or continent where they encounter them.
The boys maintain the pace after returning to Australia. They’re everywhere – parties, barbecues and the beach culture of postwar civilian life, the Melbourne Olympics, and on through the cold war of the sexes. They’re inseparable, resist the cosy domesticity of the nuclear family, faithfully retain their greatest affection for each other, and their tireless undermining of authority figures.
Created and drawn by Alex Gurney from 1941 until his death in 1955, Norm Rice took over for a year, then Les Dixon from 1957 until 1960.
