Marlene Walks to Work

Marlene in mufti - in a denim suit - walking along Castlereagh Street, October 1965. The first of two transitional moments for Australian women's fashions: a week later Jean Shrimpton wore a miniskirt to the Melbourne Cup. Publicity photograph with caption on reverse, 'Just a woman in the crowd on her way to work. But the woman is Marlene Dietrich - and the walk was from her hotel to the Theatre Royal in Sydney, Australia. Marlene was content to wear jeans and a denim jacket. No one notices her that way. Well hardly anyone. She had arrived in Sydney from Melbourne on Sunday, and her show opened last night (Oct. 28).'
