Jack McLaren was born in Melbourne, educated at Scotch College, an itinerant worker in the South Pacific and more remote parts of coastal Australia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before turning his “experiences of life on the outer rim [into] a seemingly endless supply of plots and characters”, written first in Sydney, then in London from 1925, until his death in 1954. The Chain is a mixed race story, 'a Romance of the South Seas Islands', according to the dustwrapper, and set in New Guinea. The only edition.
