Mary Renault - a Biography

An English expatriate author, whose body of work was set mostly in the male world of Ancient Greece, Mary Renault also became involved in the politics of South Africa during apartheid.

There, she was able to write forthrightly about homosexual relationships for the first time. Her sympathetic treatment of love between men won her a wide gay readership, and led to rumours she was really a gay man writing under a female pseudonym.

Mary Renault granted a rare interview to David Sweetman in 1981, two years before her death, providing the basis for this biography.

This book was a Lambada Literary Award nominee.
